The Association of International Certified Professional Accountants and the Management Accounting Section of the American Accounting Association has named John H. Evans III, alumni professor of accounting and business administration at the University of Pittsburgh, as recipient of the 2019 AAA Lifetime Contribution Award.   

The award recognizes professionals who have made a significant contribution to management accounting education, research and practice. It is sponsored by the Association, the global accounting organization formed by members of the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). The award is given on behalf of the Association’s Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation, which distinguishes a unique group of 150,000 management accountants worldwide who have reached the highest benchmark of quality and competency.

Evans was honored for his 40-plus years of research and teachings of key management accounting issues as well as his other contributions to the profession. He was presented with the award at the 2019 AAA Management Accounting Section Midyear Meeting in Fort Lauderdale, FL. 

Monte Swain, chair of the selection committee for the award and Deloitte professor of management accounting at Brigham Young University and previous president of the Management Accounting Section of the AAA, commented:

“Professor Evans truly represents the very best of the management accounting profession. His instruction over the years has prepared thousands of accounting professionals and his research is guiding management practice and providing thought leadership for CPAs and CGMA designation holders across the world.” 

Evans has received numerous awards for his research, including the Outstanding Management Accounting Paper Award from the AAA in 2012 and the Best Paper Award for the Management Accounting Section from the Journal of Management Accounting in 2012.  

He is also recognized for his excellence in teaching. In 2011, he was honored with the University of Pittsburgh’s Provost Award for Excellence in Mentoring and has also been named teacher of the year numerous times. Under Professor Evans’ direction and guidance, many students have gone on to teach and conduct research in management accounting at top universities.

A respected voice in the management accounting community, Evans has published over 50 articles, with more than 20 in top-level accounting journals. He has also served in various leadership positions including as president of the Management Accounting Section for the AAA and as editor of the Journal of Management Accounting Research and senior editor of The Accounting Review.  

Evans received a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in 1979.
